“Sorrow Songs” are the songs that have been sung and passed down through the African American culture from our days of slavery. DuBois talks about how these songs not only tell a story but hold so much more. These songs were sung during times that were meant to break us, as African Americans. But yet they showed just how strong they actually were but able to still show that there was some hope. And that there is still joy in their hearts. Passing on a story that even when the world is against you, still sing through it. for instance when you’re listening to “Nobody knows the trouble I’ve seen”, you get to hear that pain. You are listening to someone tell you that they have seen some gruesome things but you the melodies give open the door for something soothing. In a way the music created this feel of hope or joy. Knowing the history of the slavery we know all of the horrific things that they went through. But through it they were still able to make music that gave people hope. Hope that better days are coming. Same with “go and tell the mountain”, they knew they were in a messed up situation. However the words told a story of better days to come. So these songs are labeled as “sorrow songs” gives more than just some as DuBois said.

Many people may believe that they control what they listen to. Although I agree that this may be true in a sense, however our music is controlled by large media companies. Damon Krukowski talks about how streaming services are constancy taking information from all of our app service, such as what we listen to and Wheatrtist we react too. to generate the tracks that are similar to what we are already listening. Social sights have now used the algorithm as a way to flex their powers. We no longer see our friends and family we’re only see celebrities and business ads. The companies know that we use music and media to escape. They have tamed that need for an escape as a way to control us. Hence having the power to control what we see and hear. Growing up in NYC I have had the pleasure knowing alot of amazing artist from singers to rappers. Some have made it main stream while others get zoned out or lost in the crazy web we know as “Algorithm’.’ They get alot of the local respect and plays but that power the mainstream has over the industry makes it hard for the locals to make it to the big scales at times. Letting us know that we dont truly have the power we think we have over the content that is out there.

I feel that Krukoski idea of how the feeling you get when you listen to an audio an auto on a well produced mic is different than the feeling we receive when listening to someone over the phone. The sounds may be different however I believe that the feeling can still be . It honestly depends on if we’re paying attention to what I said versus how it sounds. Unlike music where he says” they may not annunciate but are a they do get their feelings across,” the telephone gives us simple words which will call us to always focus on the words that someone is saying. Although the digital media does compress our voices the words at times can still hold feelings. I honestly was unable to follow the story that he was using to prove his point due to there being so much going on with the sound during the show.

After reading the history of A.S.M.R I have a newfound respect for the genre. The way A.S.M.R was able to realize that some people enjoy the sounds because it replicates a mom touches. The soft and calming sensation can almost give that same comfort that you get. The way they mastered the art, of using the tones in their voice to maximize the effect.

Listening to “Ways of seeing “podcast really opened my eyes to the truth that everyone is now wrapped in their own bubbles. We use our social media and music to block out the world. For me, the music is an escape. I know some may believe it is a safety hazard or I’m not” living in the moment” . But when we think of all that is outside, especially living in New York City, you have to ask yourself do you truly want to live In the moment. Whether it’s the police sirens, a couple arguing, or racial slurs, none of the sounds of New York City at this time is a moment I want to live in. The inspiration that someone may face in New York, uncontrollably, does not reign the same. So although the bubble may come with a fear of negatives. It helps someone stay zen. It allows us to create a safe space in a world where safety is a constant concern from all angles. Those “living in the moment” times that everyone expects to happen in the world of the public, happen in the true world of personal life. Leaving that bubble to create those moments with your family and close friends, where we all practice the concept of cancelling out the background noise and honing in  on the real interactions that truly matters.

During the 1950’s and 1960’s the media reported the news a little more restricted than what were used to now. In”Seeing the Race”, Martin Berger talks about the way media handled their storytelling through photos. He says that the white reporters were often showcasing pictures that displays the African American people in an “oppressed”stale. On one side of the token I would say I agree with him. Looking at the images that occupied these articles we’re extremely bias. The images served clear messages for who they were written for. But then on the other side I feel as though you as the viewer or person looking for information find what you seek. Berger mentioned that other writers found images that showed the African American people in a motivational and peaceful state. The way a person thinks, or a person viewpoint, in a certain topic can direct the way they tell a story. As in media alot of what we read may be true stories but the way the person telling the story can get different views. Every writer has a secret duty in writing, to appeal to a certain audience. The audience may not always agree on the images we believe is right. And thats where an individual’s personal preference comes into play.

In “ways of seeing”, Berger says that “publicity” influences its consumers by persuading them to believe that if they buy this specific item it will make them richer. Or will provide this feeling or glamour in their life.

Berger stated that publicity images “appeals to a way of life that we aspire to or think we aspire”. Whereas oil paintings “showed what the owner was already enjoying”, however I believe that the oil paint images is also a piece of the aspire to be. Oil paintings to their owner was a still shot of what they have gained in life. Showcasing their possession trophies. Giving you the illusion that it “Showed what the owner had, but to a guest of the home the picture can be taken as a publicity. It now creates, as Berger stated, an envy. Creating the true difference of an oil painting to the owner. And the publicity that comes from when the painting is being viewed by someone with a less lavish life. Knowing this helps markets excel when it comes to publicity. They use these “possession trophies” and put it in the face of those looking at the photo. In a sense playing with their mind to create a thought saying “This could be you”.

Walt Disney World’s “Where dreams come true”, puts out a call to the inner child in every adult. And the imagination of a child. It gives off the illusion that everything you wish for, can come true if you come and visit their amusement parks.

Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein wrote that a true writer should state the reason they are writing their piece from the beginning. As well as constantly remind the readers of the reason they came up with their thesis. In doing so they say it allows the reader to not only clearly follow the storyline but come up with their own predictions on where exactly the writer is going.

In John Berger’s 1972 BBC television project “Ways of Seeing”, John Berger talks about the history of women’s presentation. He makes points about women being trained to always carry themselves to be viewed by a man. Going into talking about the techniques in European artwork, where women were constantly painted in the nude. Although Berger feels that women used their bodies as art only to appeal to men in the past, I feel that this day and age women art sexuality is so much more. Women are no longer looking for the man’s approval of what is “sexy” or “what turns them on”. The woman in this generation uses their bodies to empower one another. When you look at some Lizzo, who knows that there will be people who think her figure is not your “traditional bathing suit, runway model, she still posts her two-piece bathing suit photos. Because she knows these are girls like her who see her as a the inspiration. Women now feed off the energy of other women. The bond of an unspoken sisterhood that we love to uplift each other. Even though there are still women who post strictly for the male attention as he states, women have come a long way. So I can only half agree with the statements made.

In Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein “Entering the conversation, they suggest using certain templates in order for the writer to get more out of their audience. Beginning writers tend to focus mainly on their views, however being able to implement this model we can understand the true meaning of understanding a conversation. The templates force us to not only open our eyes to the opposite viewpoint of an individual but also open the conversation to a wider range giving anyone a chance to join the conversation. Using the models also allows you, as the writer,  ” immediate sense of how to engage in the kinds of critical thinking you are required to do at the college level and in the vocational and public spheres beyond“. page 2. The templates gives us many advantages, and though like the articles states how some people feel it cuts off their creativity. It actually gives you a chance to challenge your readers in your own creative way.

Some people may not think learning the fundamentals of analyzing artwork as a skill that can help you in your everyday life, I on the other hand think that learning to analyze artwork by seeing the picture in full detail can be used in many aspects of someone’s life. Even if your not an artist, the technique of searching for more in a piece of art can train your mind to use this skill in all aspects of your life. Once your mind is used to looking for more in artwork, it will then begin to process other things in a more in depth way. Looking at all situations in a more detailed form. Looking for not only what is in front of you but the cause and effects of the situation in front of you.

Intro To Me

Hello Class !

My name is Sonia Espada. This is my first year in college which obviously makes me a freshman. Before making the decision to enroll in a CUNY school, I went on to get my NYS Cosmetology License. Now before you think the beauty industry is a walk in the park, the science behind our bodies is no joke. After working in the field for 5 years, I found myself going back to my old ways when I would write just to clear my head. Began sharing my passion with my friends and decided that now is the perfect time for me to actually use all the tools I’ve learned in my adult life and apply the needed pressure to complete school. I’m the oldest of 4, so for me this is my second chance to show my siblings that education is yours to obtain. No matter what the skill is you can do them all and school isn’t a bore. It’s a place where your mind can show you its true potential.
