  1. According to Berger, publicity uses carriers of images and words to stimulate people’s imagination. It shows the lives of those who have made a change to let consumers feel envy. This feeling will cause consumers think that they can make themselves richer in one aspect by consuming. Publicity is significant, not only it is all around us, but also because most people want to be envied and attractive in this society that is called for moving democratic. As Berger says, being envied is a glamour. Publicity is the process of generating glamour. Thus, consumers will be attracted by these various publicity’s images and go to buy more products. The images of publicity will silently affect us imagination and remind us to think about our current situation.
  2. Oil painting and publicity photography have some difference. Oil painting is a kind of classical art and used to record the real life of the owner. It doesn’t show glamour that like publicity images, but people who watch these oil painting can feel the superiority of class life. For example, seeing the manor, beauty and carriage in the oil painting, these superiority is what makes people enviable. However, publicity advocates a life style that we desire now. It advertises all kinds of things that it thinks people want but haven’t got yet, like luxury car, luxury package and villa. The biggest difference is that publicity hopes people believe that what they buy is not just a thing but also a way of life. In my opinion, oil painting shows the owner’s wealth and lifestyle. Publicity also uses the images to reveal people’s pursuit of wealth and lifestyle. These differences are important because the eras are different. With the change of times, people who pursue wealth and lifestyle become not only those who can own oil paintings. Publicity photography is a form of marketing, but it uses a similar way with oil painting to give people the image that they can change themselves and pursue their dreams by buying things.
  3. Just like Burger’s the third dream- the distant dream. Publicity uses exotic and beautiful scenery pictures to make consumers produce various imaginations, which make them yearn for traveling. People will generate motivation through comparing their current situations with the distant dreams. The images show an unknown world where full fill passions for them, and those are charming. In order to pursue a better way of life, they will work hard to pursue their dreams. In other words, publicity use imagery through adding some elements that can generate glamour in the images to manipulate consumers. For instance, the color magazine which Berger read, author uses pictures of refugees to appeal public sympathy. However, I think it is a way to manipulate consumers. These images not just arouse consumers’ sympathy, but also make them feel superior. Publicity uses their superiority to manipulate consumers to spend for pursuing what they want.

According to Berger “publicity” influences consumers for they lead people to believe what they are buying is something that will improve or change their lives or that by buying the product they will special and that they belong to a group. This is significant because even though its clear that this product will not improve or change their lives they believe that it will make them richer and they will be more ambitious or allow them to believe they belong to a group

These differences are important because the oil painting shows the owner’s wealth and possessions which are given to them at birth. For example the person living as John Berger states back then your social class was determined at birth as opposed to what you wear and how they look. While publicity has a purpose they try to get you to believe that investing in a certain product will improve or change your life for the better. Or that spending little money and acquire the product they can be exactly like a model in the magazine or on tv.

One of the dream that Berger offers was the “skin dream” this targets the person to believe that investing in a product will leave that person’s skin looking healthy smooth. By showing a model using the skin product and promising it will make everyone beautiful. The customer will believe that by buying this product the person will have their dream skin and have a better and wonderful life

PUBLICITY (Blog Post #3)

1.According to Berger, how do “publicity”–what we would call advertising–images influence consumers and why is this significant?

According to Berger, Publicity is another language that influences common people to live a glamourous life. They make scene after scene to establish an idea about a product that this product is not only changing consumer’s life but also their relationship. They established that glamorous is for everybody. Even though few people can afford these glamorous lifestyles. The reason for this situation is to attract the consumer and they will buy more products to lead a glamorous lifestyle. These are the major part of their business which help them to be rich. Publicity is significant, not only it is all around us, but also most people want to be envied and attractive in this society that is called for moving democratic.

2. As he compares oil painting to publicity (advertising) photography, Berger argues that oil painting “showed what the owner was already enjoying among his possessions and way of life;” “it enhanced his view of himself as he already was.” Whereas publicity pictures, “appeal to a way of life that we aspire to or think we aspire to.” Why are these differences important? What do they reveal to us about the production of images for publicity?

Berger states that the difference between oil painting and photography is the idea of grace, elegance, authority which added up with glamor but fundamentally is similar. In the oil painting where we can see that the owner was already enjoying among his possessions and his way of life. It shows that the owner is already rich. On the other hand, In publicity picture suggests that if we buy what it is offering, our life will be different from what it is. Because of that publicity comes with envy which is a feeling of desire and jealousy. For that publicity also works on our anxieties about money to buy the product. It reveals to us that the production of images is not only an art but also are a tool for publicity in order to make money from consumers.

3- Choose one of the “dreams” he offers or think of your own. How does this dream offered by advertising use imagery to manipulate consumers?

I will choose ” dream of a faraway place” this dream allows me to think to travel anywhere in the world without any hesitation, rules, norms, and make my life more adventure. Travel from one place to another place to find pasture of livestock. But this is only daydreaming, which is not possible in the real world. Travel to the world without money, food, and accommodation are not possible. But the publicity makes me think that I will be them.

1.According to Berger, the publication is implied by the consumer that he needs this product because if he has it, his life will change in a drastic way and let him know. This can be made more influential with the help in some companies and businesses. This helps to improve the product making it more efficient. other people bought the product and say that this has worked for them other people buy it because they think it will be the same for example in the case of some prunings they assume that they use the product on the skin so that their skin looks clean and beautiful to that people lied to them to buy your product. the publication lies to the consumer to buy something that is not necessary but makes him feel richer.

2. Berger shows that advertising and oil painting may be the same but there is still a big difference. in the sample publication that the consumer needs the product for their life to improve. But in the ole painting it shows the difference of the product and the interpretations and failure of that said product. This is important because it gives the consumer that he does not need any product. over time changes in people seeking wealth and lifestyle become not only those who may own oil paintings.

3.Berger talks about “The Later Tonight Dream” is showing the public the best moment of your life. He says “we are all attracted to what we can achieve with pleasure but it is ourselves who cannot provide the greatest pleasure. Also Later Tonight’s dream shows images of exotic and beautiful countries so that it has the effect on the consumer of different types of imagining that this leads to yearning to travel around the world.

He considers publicity as the manufacturing of glamour. Publicity influences consumers by alluring them with this glamour. This is rendered more effective because of the nature of our society. Under capitalism we are encouraged to buy, so we can keep the economy going. Often advertisements show a product along side a model, often seen as happy or content. This is all an attempt to persuade the public perception of the product. The product is the source of the subjects happiness. There for it too will be your source of happiness. This is all significant because this implies that publicity is meant to appeal rather than actually deliver.

Their difference is important because when juxtaposed, they reveal the shift in function of these mediums. Publicity is meant to bring in consumers, by enticing them with status, glamour. Oil paintings on the other hand never showed what the subject didn’t have, they are always drawn grounded to their own material possessions. It just comes to show how superficial and manufactured advertising is.

The dream of going else where I feel is a powerful dream many people posses. Advertisements always glorify foreign lands by substituting foreign culture/symbolism with western cultures and ideals. Offering us a distortion of the actual material conditions in which the product inhabits, all in favor of the advertisements purpose. This distortion is what manipulates many into accepting the context in which advertisements where designed to put you in.

According to Berner, Publicity pictures stimulate consumer imagination and  feeling to buy things. it purses  us, makes us buying  product, and feels more richer even though consumer are poor.  It is significant.  It is process of generating  glamour because publicity attracted people attention to buy things. if there is not publicity, consumer will not but things. publicity encourage, stimulate and inspire to get those things. publicity promote the marketing in this modern society.

oil painting and publicity photography  is somehow similar, but  there are some difference. Oil painting is classic art, it shows that history ,tradition, culture. it is used to real life owner. it carries own values and tradition. we can get knowledge  which old time of period situation, but publicity picture which inspire us to buy to fulfill our desire even we don’t need it. it is always promotion the product. publicity picture compel people to buy. in my opinion, oil painting is art, it shows that history, culture, tradition. it has own values which help us to study our generation, culture. But publicity picture promote  product to sale. it encourage people to live luxurious life style. these different are important  because oil painting has own values. publicity pictures is marketing . people  are always pursuing  get it and spend easy lifestyle. it gives people anxiety about money  if consumer couldn’t get it .

according to Berner, skin dream , it is process how publicity promotes their product  about skin, and try to convince people  that will have best looking skin after using this product. it manipulate consumer  to buy beauty product. They use famous model for advertising. They claim that how that product work in our body. they makes consumer believe  that consumer utterly want to get it and use it for all consumer desire.

According to Berger in Way of Seeing Part 4, publicity is used to convey to consumers that they need that specific product. The item is portrayed in a way that shows that your life would be changed drastically. Companies achieve this by putting models or things that make it seem like the best product, for example in the skincare publicity they make sure to have models with clear and perfect skin claiming to be using the item so that people will envy and trick them into buying the product. Publicity tricks the consumer into buying things that they don’t necessarily need or are essential but makes them feel more “richer”.

Berger demonstrates that publicity and oil painting can appear different however there is a big difference. In publicity, the vendor is trying to convince the consumer that they need that product in their life for it to be better however in oil painting it shows the reality and imperfections of the item. It is confident and doesn’t need any attractiveness distracting the consumer into anything else. The consumer knows that they need this product and isn’t being tricked into it.

Berger mentions “The dream of Later Tonight” is showing the best time of your life. He mentions “Everyone is surrounded by what brings pleasure, but it is you who will bring the greatest pleasure of all.” People are shown having a good time with the alcohol and it makes the consumer envious of that life. Imagery is used to manipulate the consumers that with this certain alcohol you are guaranteed a good time.

1 – According to Berger in “Ways of seeing, Part 4”, publicity (advertising) influences consumers to change ourselves or their lives by buying something more. Doing so “publicity” persuades us to feel richer, even though we will be poorer due to the fact that we spent our money. Publicity promotes the illusion if we buy this product, our life and oneself will change drastically. This causes people to feel like they need that product in order to feel like they will be a “better” version of themselves and better their life. Publicity plays on fear of not being wanted, desirable, of being unenviable. Not too mention Publicity presents people who have used said product and how their life changed after using it. This causes you to envy those people which then leads to glamour, an attractive quality that may make people seem appealing. This is significant because publicity is promoting these products, making people believe that it will have such a significant impact on their life when in reality it won’t. People fall for it and end up pooper/asking for loans in order to obtains these products which are being false advertised. Not only that, but publicity uses peoples insecurities in order to make people feel like they need that product in order to be “beautiful”. Publicity affects our anxiety’s about money as well, making us feel like we need so much money to be able to buy all these products with exaggerative promises.

2 – The differences between oil paintings and publicity are important because it gives us a better understanding of reality. Glamour did not exist during the oil paintings because the oil paintings shows  what the person already he. It was not being promoted into making you think you need it in order for your life to be better as a whole. It showed what people already had without promoting it.  Publicity on the other hand makes people believe they need a certain product in order to be worthy and envied.

3 – Berger tells us about the “skin dream”, this shows how publicity promotes their skin product and promise you that you will have the best looking skin. Imagery is being used here to manipulate customers about the beauty and skin that they desire in order to be enviable. They use models in their advertisements who claim to have used said product and how it improved their skin which then leads to making the customers believe that they need that product so they can look just like the model with the amazing skin.

1.Berger states that It influences consumers by telling them that this is desirable, this is what gives you value. After buying the product consumers will feel their lives have reached a prestigious status. Its significant because it tells us that without this product, we are the ones who are inferior. That in order to be idolized and enviable, you must manifest that (glamour) artificial reality into your world

 2. The owner of the oil paintings was content with what was in his possession, it only increased his confidence within himself. Now Berger said, “Oil paintings and color photography share many of the same ideals, all of them related to the principle that you are what you have”. The owners of the paintings displayed what they had, they painted from “facts”, in which this signified their value. Their belongings spoke for who they are. Whereas the purpose of the advertising is for us to purchase what’s being marketed, so if we don’t incorporate that reality, we have nothing, therefore we are nothing.

 3. The Dream of Night- By showcasing images that show people enjoying themselves, along with their peers. These images speak “good times” which evokes consumers to envy a night exactly what’s being illustrated. The product leaves this effect on your life. The Imagery manipulates you by complimenting you and giving you worth by having you idolized. The setting of “night” invites you in.

1- According to Berger, how do “publicity”–what we would call advertising–images influence consumers and why is this significant?

According to Berger, publicity influences consumers to buy something more in order to achieve their dreams than to have glamorous lives like people can have in pictures. He claims that publicity is producing glamour. Glamour is for everybody who believes that they can be glamorous. Even though, there are only a few people that achieve this life style, it doesn’t stop people from fantasizing and being envious of the glamorous lifestyles displayed in pictures. Therefore, publicity encourages consumers to buy more things that are not necessarily essential but rather are needed to make consumers feel like they are glamorous.

2- As he compares oil painting to publicity (advertising) photography, Berger argues that oil painting “showed what the owner was already enjoying among his possessions and way of life;” “it enhanced his view of himself as he already was.” Whereas publicity pictures, “appeal to a way of life that we aspire to or think we aspire to.” Why are these differences important? What do they reveal to us about the production of images for publicity?

Berger emphasizes that there are fundamental differences between publicity and oil paintings. He doesn’t deny that publicity and oil paintings are used by many of the same references such as concept, gesture and pose. They celebrate the same qualities in things. On one hand, publicity works on glamour that people want to have by making them spend their money. On the other hand, for owners of oil paintings, glamour doesn’t exist. They don’t need to spend money. They already have wealthy, elegant lives, as most of time painting represents exactly what kind of life an owner of an oil painting has. It reveals to us that production of images is not only an art, but also are tools for publicity in order to make money from consumers.

3- Choose one of the “dreams” he offers or think of your own. How does this dream offered by advertising use imagery to manipulate consumers?

Berger mentions three dreams in episode four. The dream of a far away place advertises consumers to travel and having an adventure. As can be seen in pictures, main characters wear their own clothes without matching other characters or concepts in pictures. It helps us to put ourselves in the shoes of main characters and imagine that we could also be there and have our own adventures.
