Sorrow Songs

According to Du Bois, what is the significance of what he calls the “sorrow songs” to African-American history and culture?

The ” Sorrow Songs’ as Du Bois describes them, are a microcosm of the achievements of African  descendants  in America. These songs which like their compsores, have been refined by their fires of American slavery injustice and oppression.

Which of the songs featured in this chapter is the most significant, in your opinion, and why?

According to me the song ” You may bury me in the east” is the most significant song. Their pain was conveyed by  each term. They conveyed in these song that their lives and death were both unknown  and contingent on their liberty.

Power (Blog#7)

According to Damon Krukowski states that “The Marginalization, the Exclusion, the Persecution” is only due to the current modern society of humanity , where  the original  musical universe is not sponsored. Today, The  Entertainment company is becoming a place where entertainment is only for business. For their entertainment,  people used to go into a bookstore, or record store, or library for their entertainment which not only provides them with entertainment, but also gives them knowledge. whatever, they read or listen which makes them more knowledgeable. Because of online, we find  everything in youtube, amazon or many other website which gives us idea about only the particular thing that we are searching for. I think, the internet accessible makes people lazy to use and download music or read books online, because of that people do not go to buy books or CDs in the bookstore or record store. The contrast is that the powerful treatment is all about making money and being successful while the old artist are more proud of the music’s art element. Still, they believes that the power of music has changed the world.

Blog Post #6

1.In this episode, Kruskowsi’s ideas are essentially when he explained the how the world is more dependent on digital song than analog sound. People used to enjoy music show manually. Because of modern technology, people are not familiar with the real music sound. He also explained the real voice and the microphone sound differently but the way new technologies manipulate our thinking of hearing of sound. That’s real voice is lost in technologies. Kruskowsi said ” the biggest complaint from kid that they said that in song, if i understand one word than may be i ll be more interested about song”. Because of modern  technology, I agree with them, the sound does  not come the listener properly because we find several files about the lyrics on Youtube or Google.

2. when we listen, ASMR is  soothing. It allows us to decrease our exhaustion and increase our efficiency. Most people, before they go to to sleep, listen to ASMR. Natural sounds enhance our hearing capability. As an example, Before my every test, for instance, I listen to ASMR, it helps me assert my mind and strengthen my way of thinking that helps me to focus test time.

What We Hear Actually (Blog Post#5)

The Podcast “Ways of hearing in SPACE” by Krukowski wants to clarify why our generation is deprived of natural sounds. He said that he grew up in Manhattan with the sound of heater, subway, busy streets, winds with all the sounds of natural.  Nowadays, though, he has  found that everyone is more interested in Sound technologies  than natural sounds which are more beautiful and pure. I think i can relate to him, most of  we used airport or earphone in our ears to avoid the sound, teasing, or unwanted things that happened around us. That’s how we are robbed of the natural sound. I have also found that homeless people ask for  money in the subway to avoid their sounds many people used airphone and avoid the sound of support. There are even a few guys playing  various instruments, singing songs  in the subway to raise money. They want our to grow themselves, essentially. Yet the technology that we use makes us fascinated with ourselves. We never consider that the sound is not just for noise, but also for the support of those who are humanity’s responsibility.

Civil Rights (Blog #4)

What do you make of Berger’s argument? Do you agree, disagree, or something in between? Use the information from Chapter 4 of They Say/I Say and the “Sheridan Baker Thesis Machine” and write a thesis statement in which you take a position on Berger’s argument.

Civil rights images depicting the struggle of African Americans in Birmingham, Alabama, during the sixties. I agree with Berger, who is not only focused on the significance of these visual images in garnering support for the black civil rights struggle but focuses that the way of documentary photographs of that era reveals as much about whiteness as they do about blackness. Pictures of black people photographed as they asked sympathy from white people. Berger illuminates “the role that the photographs played in managing whites’ anxieties about race,” but more specifically, “how white journalists and their audiences selected, framed, and responded to the most famous scenes of the civil rights era”(pg6).

PUBLICITY (Blog Post #3)

1.According to Berger, how do “publicity”–what we would call advertising–images influence consumers and why is this significant?

According to Berger, Publicity is another language that influences common people to live a glamourous life. They make scene after scene to establish an idea about a product that this product is not only changing consumer’s life but also their relationship. They established that glamorous is for everybody. Even though few people can afford these glamorous lifestyles. The reason for this situation is to attract the consumer and they will buy more products to lead a glamorous lifestyle. These are the major part of their business which help them to be rich. Publicity is significant, not only it is all around us, but also most people want to be envied and attractive in this society that is called for moving democratic.

2. As he compares oil painting to publicity (advertising) photography, Berger argues that oil painting “showed what the owner was already enjoying among his possessions and way of life;” “it enhanced his view of himself as he already was.” Whereas publicity pictures, “appeal to a way of life that we aspire to or think we aspire to.” Why are these differences important? What do they reveal to us about the production of images for publicity?

Berger states that the difference between oil painting and photography is the idea of grace, elegance, authority which added up with glamor but fundamentally is similar. In the oil painting where we can see that the owner was already enjoying among his possessions and his way of life. It shows that the owner is already rich. On the other hand, In publicity picture suggests that if we buy what it is offering, our life will be different from what it is. Because of that publicity comes with envy which is a feeling of desire and jealousy. For that publicity also works on our anxieties about money to buy the product. It reveals to us that the production of images is not only an art but also are a tool for publicity in order to make money from consumers.

3- Choose one of the “dreams” he offers or think of your own. How does this dream offered by advertising use imagery to manipulate consumers?

I will choose ” dream of a faraway place” this dream allows me to think to travel anywhere in the world without any hesitation, rules, norms, and make my life more adventure. Travel from one place to another place to find pasture of livestock. But this is only daydreaming, which is not possible in the real world. Travel to the world without money, food, and accommodation are not possible. But the publicity makes me think that I will be them.

  1. According to Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein, writers should use the model of “entering the conversation” in their writing. What are the advantages of this model?

The advantages of using the mode, “entering the conversation” that its gives another way to think of view, and it also helps to develop listening skills and understand to other views of thinking.

2.The smarthistory videos on the schedule this week discuss how learning to look at artwork help us analyze other situations. Do you agree or disagree? Why?

Blog post #2 (WoMen)

Women is the most beautiful creature of god. But women used as an object in the society not as a subject. In 1972 BBC television project, “Ways of Seeing”John Berger explained that women always used as an Eye Candy for men, it does not matter with dresses or without dresses.

Many years ago, women used as sexual object in portrayed. Now women also used as sexual object. All magazines, Tv show, Award program comes with those who women who adjust with sexual object and attract the audiences. Nowadays, women have the platform where they post whatever they want. Few women are happily post their pictures as they want and few are not.

It’s all about how the feel about your appearances. But there is no  difference, still women used as sexual object for the society.
