  1. According to Du Bois, what is the significance of what he calls the “sorrow songs” to African-American history and culture?

Sorrow songs were passed down from generation to generation. Some sang them, and maybe didn’t really know the true meaning but yet some did. These “Sorrow Songs” were sung by slaves seeking freedom and freedom for their souls. The songs all had a meaningful purpose. These songs got recognize worldwide, and yet people still hear. These sorrow songs haunted Du Bois because he knew slaves were suffering and wanting freedom. These songs are meaningful since they are from their people that had been threw the worst. These songs unite them one way or another and stay together.

  1. All the songs are significant, but in my opinion, the piece that stands out for me is “Nobody knows the trouble I’ve seen” I think these make me sit down and think how many suffer and were slaves and how much things they had to go threw for their freedom when nobody should have past threw ever. In the song, it says only, “Jesus know what I’ve been through,” and it’s right. Nobody knows what you are going through even if they see, but don’t know what inside of you is going through. I think all the songs hit different, but they all have a meaning of what others went through that nobody should go through.

I think it is pretty interesting to get to know someone else’s point of view of music and how it’s changed. In this case, Damon Krukowski compares how music was way much hard to hear and having to wait a period of time for you to hear about an artist or what new album they were coming out with. Compare to how music now in 2020, we are getting connected to music apps that we all use now. Now music apps get to have our info, billing info, and getting charge monthly, and before, we only bought a cd and listen to that music until we thought it was time for a new one. He says now we don’t hear new music or talented artists since were stuck listening to the same theme and the recommendations we get from the apps or google. He is right. In my opinion, some of us are stuck in just a few artists and don’t explore anything else. We are also paying more and most likely selling our info to these companies.

I think Damon Krukowski proves his point In how your voice can change in the microphone and being more sexually by just hearing the person voice, making you feel like the person is next to you! In my opinion, it can be compared to a.s.m.r but in words then objects. He also explains how it can make you imagine the person next to you and make a connection through the voice on the microphone.
After reading the article, I learned more about what is a.s.m.r and how it makes some people feel just with the smallest sounds of different things. It makes you feel a tingly or sensation in the brain. After watching the .s.m.r, it gave me anxiety. I really didn’t enjoy some do enjoy. I really didn’t feel anything. It just got me to feel nervous about the noises they were making; maybe is just me. But it is interesting how it got the name and how it became a sensation for a lot of people.

I can agree with Berger’s argument as he states, in his article that newspapers and social media only show African Americans as victims. I agree with him because yes I feel like protesters, social media only do to show compassion for them instead of showing what’s really going and letting the truth be told. As now it happened with the case of Floyd, you will see African Americans posted everywhere why because they actually got together and stood up. still, news, social media, will make it seem yes there are the victims but yet there’s no respect for them. The whites editors that allow this want to make their audience believes blacks are victims in the worst way to get more (whites) audience.

According to Berger, how do “publicity”–what we would call advertising–images influence consumers and why is this significant?

Advertising makes consumers want to buy things they don’t need but will pursue the consumer in many ways to make them think it will change their lives and the way they living if they buy what’s advertising. This is significant because all this brand and publicity are making these people believe things that are not really going to change unless you have money for it, it will make the publicity true. If not you will have the product but living the same.

  1. As he compares oil painting to publicity (advertising) photography, Berger argues that oil painting “showed what the owner was already enjoying among his possessions and way of life;” “it enhanced his view of himself as he already was.”  Whereas publicity pictures, “appeal to a way of life that we aspire to or think we aspire to.” Why are these differences important? What do they reveal to us about the production of images for publicity?
  2. Oils paints had already had its meaning that they were already living that life more real compare to publicity was they wanted you to feel guilty that you deserve that life you deserved that living even that you couldn’t afford it. I think both have a different meaning and oil painting will be something that was there something you could really have an image. Compare to the publicity they want you to buy or make you feel mandatory to buy. They both are different but have almost the same meaning.

  1. Choose one of the “dreams” he offers or thinks of your own. How does this dream offered by advertising use imagery to manipulate consumers?
  2. The dream of “Later tonight” this dream shows how you could be having a good time and makes you feel like you in the image makes you imagine you enjoying yourself with some drinks that when you wake up from reality you will still be desiring it the next morning. It kind of eats you up thinking it will make you different when they will enjoy the time with you until you finish your money then you won’t be in the group. But make you think you will be them.

As today’s generation women stand up for themself and yes we do get judge for things we post on social media like a picture showing some skin but now you don’t get judge or glare by men only also by women’s. some have good comments others don’t. As what to john Berger says’ in the video “women who are not judge are normal and the women who are they are the prize”. I can tell men only liked to judge the ones they like and find attracted to the women who did these paintings. Women now control what audience they want to have nothing compared to the renaissance painting when they were used for pleasure and the male gaze. Yes, there are women that do it for pleasure but that’s if they are consent and want to do it. Time has changed and things are different. I feel a woman will always be judge no matter the time we are in.

According to Gerald Graft and Cathy Birkenstien, writers should use the model of “entering the conversation” in their writing. What are the advantages of this model?

The advantages of using this model are that it will help have a better interaction and having a better conversation. To have a better understanding of using different phrases and using them in your everyday work or a thesis in your paper works. Sometimes as a new student or anyone in general we have trouble starting an essay or any kind of paperwork or trying to find a way to be involved with others and these advantages are a good way to have in mind.

The smart history videos on the schedule this week, discuss how learning to look at artwork help us analyze other situations. Do you agree or disagree? Why?

Yes, I agree that artwork helps you understand more and gives you a better visual of the scene. Artwork can be read and visualizes in different ways and understanding the artist’s point of you threw their artwork. It makes you think more and wonders about the artist’s meaning. It can also help you see things in a different way and get a better understanding of what’s happening in the photo or artwork.
