From the “sorrow songs”, we can see the resistance of African Americans to unequal treatment. These songs represent the message that the black slaves conveyed to the world their grief and helplessness and their desire for freedom and equality. These “sorrow songs” also record history and the spirit of African Americans. These are very important and worth remembering for them.

These few songs impressed me very much. It is the first one and I like it very much. I think it expresses emotions incisively and vividly. Even if I don’t read the lyrics, I can feel sadness. Bel Canto’s singing is easy to bring emotions into the audience.

At the beginning of the “Power” episode, Damon Krukowski asserts, “the marginal-the rejected-the repressed-is whatever the powerful have decided is of no use at the moment.” He goes on to ask, “But might it [the marginal-the rejected-the repressed] not be a key to alternate approaches-to art, to society-to power itself?” (“Marginalized” is an adjective that describes a person, group, or concept that is treated as insignificant or peripheral.) What is he trying to get at with this question? How does music indicate the differences between the powerful and the marginalized?

I did not really understand the podcast this week. I interpret the question to mean that the niche record magazine gave a more personalized experience than larger powerful companies like Spotify. Almost similar to a small business versus big company power struggle. You may get cheaper prices or more selection at a big box retail store but you will get more tailored experience from a small local business.

Damon Krukowski claims that record stores are ” marginalized, the rejected, the repressed” since most music outlets are online-based. Nobody buys records anymore because they are considered old school. More people nowadays believe that listening to music on record or anything that they used ‘ back in the days ‘ is just aesthetically pleasing, but the easier way is listening to it with headphones or through a speaker. The difference is that when you go to a record store you experience the real music feeling the beat of how they play an instrument and a good vibe, knowing about music history and the possibility of having a connection with the record. Now there are apps you can listen to music but you not going to experience the real sound of it, nor the history of it.

The large difference is that when you go to a record store you truly get to experience the music, feel the vibe and aura, know about the artist, and have a heart-to-heart connection with the music as you are able to inquire about it. Using apps, you only get music that was randomly generated through recommendations and what you have previously liked.

Music can reflect people’s mood and character and also help us preserve a memory. Music recommendations make it easier for us to find the type of music we want to listen to. It can make us easier in music selection. We no longer need to spend a lot of time looking for a style. Because technology can help us quickly match the music we want. As Damon Krukowski mentioned that all you want is what you want. Music has different meanings to everyone. Sometimes we prefer to use music instead of words to express our emotions. People can also appreciate many feelings that cannot be expressed in words. Music recommendations can also allow us to discover more good music.

Based on the article, many photography stores would advertise the pictures with white cops or whites committing violent crimes against black people because they sold more often than a regular picture of protesters standing and marching with signs in their hands. They used this tactic of manipulation as a way to make more money as soon as they realized the benefits. They noticed that people were attracted to the drama and negativity behind these images. I feel as if this is wrong for the simple fact that if these are the only images you are advertising those people who have trouble keeping up with the news or times will think or may be confused into thinking that this is the only current and occurring events happening and with that being said it could fuel violence from both blacks and whites against each other. If anything all this is doing is making the greedy rich and instigating a race war and only causing hate, now don’t get me wrong yes those things in the image happened but it is immorally wrong to use these images just to put money in your pockets knowing what the consequences could be.

In Damon Krukowski’s Ways of Hearing Episode 2 Love, he presents the argument that because sound has moved to a digital platform to keep up with today’s technology, the human voice has lost an element of their character as opposed to when speaking with an analog microphone. He states “…the sound of our voices on the phone has gotten worse with the switch to digital, but it’s not because the microphones in them have gotten worse.” He goes on to say, “The reason is that…cellphones don’t transmit the full range of sound picked up by their mics. Instead they digitally process that sound compressing it to remove whatever engineers have decided is unnecessary data.” I wholeheartedly agree with Krukowski’s observations on digital sound versus analog. When listening to modern music, many artists’ voices sound heavily processed or auto-tuned. Compare that to hearing an artist sing live or acoustic, you are able to hear much more character, emotion, and texture. Some singers are able to project the emotion they are feeling into their performance making it much more personable. When you are able to hear texture in a singer’s voice it greatly separates their performance from ordinary.
The New York Times article “How A.S.M.R. Became a Sensation” the writer explores how ASMR became a hit and how it connects many people. In my opinion, the most interesting point about sound in ASMR is the fact that ASMR triggers are usually intimate, such as whispering and talking in low calm voices. This intimacy is now being mass produced and shared with millions of people by Youtube ASMR channels. This strikes me as ironic because as a society we are now more withdrawn in person socially, yet people seek out forms of intimacy through the internet.

I think Damon Krukowski proves his point In how your voice can change in the microphone and being more sexually by just hearing the person voice, making you feel like the person is next to you. In my opinion, it can be compared to a.s.m.r but in words then objects.

I think the most interesting part about sound in the history of A.S.M.R is it can be used to reduce anxiety. I have been struggling with my anxiety for the past 3 years and epilepsy my whole life. I in the past used to take medicine for my anxiety. Personally, I hate taking it, especially I didn’t feel like it did any good to me. Furthermore, taking a prescription medicine might damage your liver. That why you have to consult with a doctor.  Since I discovered a new method of controlling my anxiety, im looking forward to continuing to do my research about this I believe it might somehow help me with my case.

Ways of Hearing‘‘Love’’ , it tells how digital sound conveys people’s feelings from a distance. I agree with Damon Krukowski. He mentioned that feeling is built on the sound of the voices. Digital sound brings people closer even when they are in different places. In addition, the microphone can bring a variety of effects of sound, such as the distance we speak from the microphone. If a person speaks very close to the microphone we will feel as if he is right beside us. For our current online class students, the clear transmission of digital sound can make the course smoothly. Digital sound is convenient for people to convey their feelings from a distance. Even if we can’t see the other person’s face, we can feel what the other person wants to convey through our voice and tone. The impact of digital sound on people’s lives is huge. The telephone can convey the feelings between us and our loved ones through digital sound.

I think the most interesting thing about sound is that it can regulate and relax our mood. Many audio-decompressed videos are popular on the Internet. People tap or squeeze things into the microphone to make the sound diverse and this kind of sound can make people feel comfortable. This is also the peculiarity of sound. The beautiful and slow sound can also help people sleep. It can be found that the transmission of sound plays an important role in people’s lives. We are increasingly inseparable from the wonderful feeling brought by digital sound.
