LaGuardia Humanitarian Initiative

Dear Colleagues,

We hope everyone is staying healthy and safe.

LaGuardia Humanitarian Initiative’s theme for the academic year 2020-2021  is “Borders, Home, and Migration” (United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 16).

Keeping in tune with the present social and political climate and reinforcing the mission of translating classroom learning, pedagogy, and lived experiences into actions for social change, The LaGuardia Humanitarian Initiative (LHI) would like to welcome you and your students to the following October events co-organized by faculty, staff, and students:

  1. a)     October 7th, 12:00-1:30pm: Panel Discussion on Race and Immigration: Attitudes, Policies, and Support.

Panelists: Angie Adams (Amal Alliance, Global NGO); Caridad Munoz (LaGuardia Rising); Monique Francis, (CUNY Citizenship Now); Kendra Cornejo( Make the Road, NGO, New York)

 

  1. b)     October 14th, 2:00-3:00pm– Interactive session with activist members from Make the Road; Theme: “Voting” and “How to support fighting police brutality and criminalization of our communities”; Volunteering opportunities for students.

 

  1. c)     October 21st, 1:00-2:00pm– Interactive session with Attorney Midori Hills, CUNY Citizenship Now.
  2. d)     October 28th, 2:00-3:00pm– Caridad Munoz (LaGuardia Rising) and Estefany Gonzaga (CTL, Academic Affairs) in conversation with Dreamers.

  1. e)     Deema Bayrakdar, Director of Women’s Center and LGBTQIA Safe Zone Hub will lead Weekly Support Circles for students exploring themes of home, the world, movement, and identity (Wed. from 11:45am -12:45pm from 9/16–12/16). Students can RSVP here.

Coming up: November 18th from 12:00-2:00pm United Nations virtual tour and expert briefing on the theme of “Global Impact on Migrant and Refugee Crisis during COVID-19.”

 

LHI will also be sharing various volunteering and internship opportunities for students at both local and global NGO’s.
