Blog # 2 Prompt

  1. Do representations of women today objectify them in the same or similar ways as what Berger argues about women depicted in Renaissance paintings? Do women have control over their images in the media or are they still determined by the male gaze? Does sexuality play the same role in images of women today as what Berger describes? (As you think about your answer think of specific places in the episode to respond to, and try to use techniques from They Say/I Say to formulate your response. In other words, use Berger’s analysis as a “they say.”)

In those times women were a representative of a lot of art because, as we say today, women are art, they are our women, etc. In those times women were the important basis of many of the creations that today but not only in art, we can also see it In music videos, women also give a little color to everything, basically women are an important basis for men since many things flow from inspirations watching them

On the one hand, John Berger’s representation of how women are objectified has been demonstrated for decades whether it has been in the media or through paintings. On the other hand there are women in the world who feel differently because these days you have way more control over how you portray yourself in images. My own view on the topic would be that I do not think sexuality plays the same role as what Berger describes. I would agree that sexuality does still play a role in how women are viewed in images in society, but this is not to say that women are still objectified in the same manner that they were in the Renaissance paintings. They say that a nude has to be seen as an object in order to be nude. I say that society has evolved and the male gaze no longer has the power to determine the image of women as they did in the 1970s.

In the era of the Renaissance oil paintings of woman were depicted as a form of art, not only in the form of painting but in the daily life of a woman, there are many different ways that woman are as art in the world we are in today. Theres social media, music videos, woman who sing are all forms of art and they’re way of expressing art. Back in the Renaissance era, woman were usually captured in an image while being in nude but in the world that we live in today woman have more control over how they are captured whether they are nude or clothed and I agree that sexuality played a role in the Renaissance era and it plays a bigger role in the world today and I agree with Jermaine Moore when the student states, “the male gaze no longer has the power to determine the image of woman as they did in the 1970s” because woman have a choice over their bodies and what they want to show to the world when they are viewed.

Today’s representations of women objectify them in a similar way as Berger argues from the Renaissance paintings, passive and charm woman as they taught us to be nowadays. In my opinion women don’t have control over their images neither on the media or the real life, the image that women see of themselves is always “not enough” far from the image that the society tells that we should be. Sexuality plays almost the same role in images of women as Berger describes, as if women didn’t own her sexuality as if they should wait for a man and not to actively enjoy it but to please the man.
