Blog Post #5 | Cherilene Guzman

In his podcast, Krukowski and his guests point out how people are completely caught up with their phones and headphones that they don’t even notice the space around them. Jeremiah Moss describes this as “a private kind of bubble in which to move through public space”. In my own experience, I do witness many other people moving around in these bubbles, but I choose to walk around without headphones. The noises of New York was part of the appeal of the city for me. Every day I used to walk out my door and hear the men on my apartment stoop blasting music having conversations. I enjoy the honking of cars and buses and the rustle of the subway, but many others like to drown out the noise. However, it is interesting to note that these past seven months have been different for NYC sounds. The ambulance sirens have a different meaning. The outdoor noise has become quieter, and the men that used to hang out on my stoop have disappeared. The soundscape of NYC has changed as people are confined to stay inside.

Yes, the virus has changed our noisy city. Often these “noises” represent the breath of life. Living in this fast-paced city, it’s easy to lose ourselves and sometimes feel unreal. Most of the time these “noises” will give us a warning that we are there and we are not alone.

Yes, I really agree with you. I’m used to the hustle and bustle of New York City. When promoting New York City, the sound of crowded subway station, the sound of noisy business district and the sound of the nights with some hoking in my mind. The various sounds build up a soundscape of NY in my mind. However, as Schafer says, different soundscape can reflect a society. The epidemic has changed New York’s soundscape and society.

I agree cherilene. The soundscape of the city is where most people’s love for it lies. The multiculural experiences the city offers through sound alone can reflect on the city’s personality.

I agree with Cherilene, if you take a day to walk around the city listening to the sounds that the city makes you hear so many different things and sometimes its for the best. People today are always on their phones, but for them its the music that they listen to that helps them get through the day, its like a form of motivation
